When should you Review your Will

Someone said, we recommend our clients to review their Will often is because we want to earn more. In fact, reviewing Will is for the testator's beneficiaries, not for us as estate planner. There's nothing for us to get from the estate.

Reviewing Will is to make sure you are leaving GIFTs for your loves, instead of leaving DEBTs and PROBLEMs for them.

Here are some guidelines for you to follow. There is no hard and fast rule when you should review your Will. If you are doing well financially, once a year is a good time. There is no harm in reviewing it more often but at the very minimum, at least once in two years.

Besides that, if any of the following circumstances occur, then you should consider rewriting your Will:-

  • one or more of your executor pass away
  • a beneficiary in your Will pass away
  • you nave a new arrival in your family
  • an impending divorce or separating from your spouse
  • you are going to get married or remarry
  • your guardians change their mind or migrated
  • death of a witness, your witness migrate or you have difficulty to locate both witnesses
  • there is substantial changes to your assets
  • your intend to re-allocate your assets among your beneficiaries
  • some or all of your children become adults

When such changes takes place, it is a good idea to review your Will. As time passes, you may change your mind on who you want to inherit your assets. Whatever the circumstances, whether there are significant changes to your life situation or not, you should just look over your Will.

A good time to review your Will is around your own birthday. Mark it down on your calendar a few days prior or after your special day. For those who signed up to use our tools, we will send you a reminder by email to review your Will. This reminder is sent approximately one year from the time you signed up with us.

We realize that most people are busy and won't remember. That is why we put it in place. With 2 dates a year, hopefully you won't be like some who have not updated their Will in over 5 years. This is way too long.

Since you can write your own Will, there's no need to think about additional legal fees whenever you update your Will.
